Bhimsen Das Pradhan has been elected the president of Nepali Congress (NC), District Committee, Kathmandu by the district convention held in Nepal Academy, Kathmandu on Tuesday.
Newly elected president of Nepali Congress, District Committee, Kathmandu...
Pradhan defeated Rajan KC by 38 votes. He received 519 votes, while KC received 481 votes. Run-off election between the top two candidates was conducted in Kathmandu after none of the candidates secured a majority in the election held last Thursday.
Pradhan was backed by acting president Sushil Koirala and presidential candidate in the previous election Lokesh Dhakal.
KC was backed by NC vice president Prakash Man Singh. Although, Kathmandu used to be considered Singh’s stronghold in the past, he had lost many followers after he backed a non-Newar candidate in a place where majority of the voters are from the Newar community.
Pradhan has a background in University teaching. He is a former chairman of Tribhuvan University Teachers’ Association. He was also a candidate for the post of Constituent Assembly (CA) member from Kathmandu constituency no. 6, where he lost to UCPN (Maoist) candidate Hitman Shakya.
Kathmandu district committee is considered the most important strategically among the district committees of the party.
Likewise, Abdul Razaak has been elected president of Rupandehi district committee and Man Bahadur Shahi has been elected the president of Bajura district committee.
The party is yet conduct district conventions in over a dozen districts due to disputes and the results of the election in some of the districts where the conventions have been conducted are yet to come. nepalnews.com
